This 400-acre resort in inland Carlsbad is all about championship golf and an exclusive spa, as it retains its long-held aura of exclusivity. It's located 2 miles from the beach and 30 miles from downtown San Diego.
Oversized guestrooms—many completely renovated—are housed within several Spanish-style buildings, and offer custom-made furnishings, rich woods, mini-bars, in-room safes, and multi-line phones.
Copious amenities, even in the midst of its major renovation in 2003, include two 18-hole PGA championship golf courses, 21 tennis courts, an athletic club, a full spa, and two outdoor pools.

Standard Room - These guestrooms feature one king-size bed, accommodating a maximum of two guests; or two double beds, accommodating a maximum of four guests. Most of the rooms are in the main building behind the front desk, and offer courtyard or patio views, in-room vanity areas with large mirrors, and marble-and-tile baths with shower/tub combinations.
Deluxe Room - These extra-spacious guestrooms feature one king-size bed or two double beds; rooms can accommodate a maximum of four guests. These rooms are located in the “Spa” and “Golf” buildings, and have step-up or step-down sitting areas and marble baths.

Amenity highlights: This long-time hideaway for celebrities and tycoons has hosted the PGA Tour's Tournament of Champions for 30 years, and hosts professional tennis tournaments. It is known for its two 18-hole golf courses; the Jim McLean Golf School; a racquet club with 21 tennis courts with three playing surfaces; the La Costa Spa; separate pools and decks for men and women; steam rooms; saunas; and a new athletic club with personal trainers and classes.
Insider tip: Not only does this property sport a world-class spa and athletic club, it also is home to “wellness guru” Deepak Chopra’s Chopra Center. Currently located in the spa, guests can take part in Chopra yoga classes in the Athletic Club Monday–Friday at no extra charge (classes are included in the mandatory resort fee). Meditation classes also are offered, including an introductory session for newcomers.
